This page explains exactly where the numbers in our Starbucks calorie calculator come from, what is published by Starbucks and what is estimated, and how we test the calculations.
Where the numbers come from
- Standard drink recipes: calories, sugar, protein and caffeine for each standard drink and size come from nutrition information Starbucks publishes for its U.S. menu. When a drink shows the “Starbucks-published value” badge, the number matches that published value.
- Official milk swaps: where Starbucks publishes a value for a different milk (for example a latte made with oatmilk), we use that published number.
- Food items: nutrition for bakery, breakfast and lunch items is taken from Starbucks’ published U.S. nutrition labels as compiled by public nutrition databases. Where a published value looked clearly wrong, we left it out instead of guessing.
What is estimated
- Customizations: when you change syrup pumps, shots, milk amount, cold foam, whipped cream or toppings, we start from the published value and add or subtract the nutrition of each ingredient you changed. Results are labeled “Official base + your changes”.
- Drinks without a published value are calculated from the standard recipe and labeled “Estimated from recipe”.
- Saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium and fiber for drinks are estimated from ingredient data and marked with an asterisk (*) on the nutrition label.
How we test it
Every time the calculator is updated, an automated test checks that each standard recipe and each published milk swap still reproduces Starbucks’ published value exactly. The current version passes all 817 of those checks. We also check that customizations move the numbers in the right direction (for example, removing whipped cream always lowers calories).
Limits you should know about
Drinks are made by hand, so real drinks vary by store and barista. Recipes and menus change, and seasonal drinks come and go. Use these numbers as a close guide, not an exact measurement. This site is for general information only and is not medical or dietary advice.
